Kingston Removals Health and Safety Policy
Kingston Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers, contractors, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our removals and related services. We recognise that effective health and safety management is an integral part of delivering reliable moving and storage solutions and is essential to the long-term success of our business.
This policy sets out our general approach to health and safety and the arrangements we have in place to manage risks associated with removals, packing, loading, transport and delivery activities.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary objectives are to prevent injury and ill health, protect property, and minimise disruption arising from accidents or unsafe practices. We will achieve this by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing suitable control measures for all aspects of our services, including home removals, office relocations, packing, loading, unloading and secure handling of goods.
We will regularly review our performance and seek continuous improvement in health and safety standards throughout Kingston Removals.
Responsibilities and Management Commitment
The management of Kingston Removals accepts overall responsibility for ensuring that this Health and Safety Policy is implemented and maintained. Managers will provide clear direction, necessary resources and competent supervision so that safe working practices become standard across all our operations.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day implementation of this policy, including planning work safely, conducting checks on vehicles and equipment, monitoring lifting and handling techniques, and ensuring that staff follow the procedures and training provided.
All employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Every member of the Kingston Removals team is required to cooperate fully with this policy, follow safe systems of work and report hazards, near misses, accidents or unsafe conditions immediately.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Kingston Removals will carry out risk assessments for key activities such as manual handling of furniture and boxes, use of lifting equipment, driving and loading of vehicles, access to properties, and work in confined or elevated spaces such as stairwells. The findings of these assessments will be used to develop and maintain safe methods of work.
Where reasonably practicable, risks will be eliminated. Where elimination is not possible, risks will be reduced through control measures such as correct equipment selection, use of trolleys and lifting aids, team lifts, traffic management, route planning and the use of personal protective equipment as needed.
Job-specific considerations, such as limited access, heavy or awkward items and parking restrictions, will be assessed in advance wherever possible so that suitable arrangements can be made to complete the work safely.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a core part of removals work and is a significant cause of injury in the industry. Kingston Removals will ensure that manual handling tasks are properly assessed and that staff receive training in safe lifting techniques, load assessment and team coordination.
Where appropriate, we will use handling equipment such as trolleys, dollies, straps, ramps and lifting devices to reduce physical strain and the risk of injury. All equipment and vehicles will be maintained in safe working order and inspected at appropriate intervals.
Employees must use equipment correctly and follow the guidance and instructions provided. Any defects or concerns with equipment or vehicles must be reported immediately so that remedial action can be taken.
Training, Information and Supervision
Kingston Removals will provide employees with the training and information they need to work safely. This includes induction training for new starters and ongoing instruction in areas such as manual handling, vehicle safety, securing loads, safe driving practices, working in customers premises and emergency procedures.
Where tasks require specific competencies, suitable training and, where necessary, certification will be provided. Supervisors will monitor working practices, provide guidance and address any unsafe behaviour or non-compliance with the policy.
Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety
Our vehicles are essential to our removals and delivery services, and we are committed to operating them safely and responsibly. Vehicles will be regularly serviced and maintained, and pre-use checks will be carried out by drivers to identify any issues that could affect safety.
Drivers must be appropriately licensed, medically fit, and comply with road traffic law, speed limits and parking regulations. Loads will be secured safely to prevent movement during transit, and routes will be planned to minimise risk where possible, taking into account road conditions and local restrictions.
Kingston Removals will not require or encourage staff to drive while fatigued or to compromise safety in order to meet deadlines. Breaks and rest periods will be observed in line with applicable requirements and good practice.
Customer Premises and Public Safety
Our teams frequently work in domestic homes, offices and other premises. We will take all reasonably practicable steps to carry out removals without causing harm to occupants, visitors or members of the public.
Where necessary, we will put in place measures such as clear walkways, safe stacking of boxes, careful use of ramps and protection of floors or surfaces. Particular care will be taken around stairs, narrow corridors, shared entrances, footpaths and driveways. Customers will be advised where temporary restrictions or precautions are needed for safety during the move.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of work-related ill health will be recorded and, where appropriate, investigated to identify root causes and prevent recurrence. Kingston Removals will ensure that suitable first aid arrangements are in place, including access to first aid equipment and trained personnel where required.
Emergency procedures will be developed and communicated to staff, including actions to take in the event of fire, serious injury, vehicle incidents or other emergencies during removals work.
Consultation and Policy Review
Kingston Removals will consult with employees on health and safety matters and encourage feedback on ways to improve safety, efficiency and working conditions. Where appropriate, we will take account of guidance and industry best practice relevant to removals and transport activities.
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and updated when necessary, for example when there are significant changes to our operations, new equipment or procedures are introduced, or relevant legislation or guidance is revised. All employees will be made aware of any significant changes.
By working together and following the principles set out in this policy, Kingston Removals aims to maintain a safe, professional and dependable removals service for all customers and communities we serve.
